Virgin Valley girls basketball team reaps rewards for 3A state final run
Virgin Valley's girls basketball team has been rewarded for its run to the Class 3A state title game with a large haul of postseason awards.
Senior center Rachel Morris, a Utah signee, was voted 3A Southern League Most Valuable Player by coaches and made the 3A all-state first team.
Virgin Valley's Chimane Creer was named league Coach of the Year, and guard Madison Bowler took first-team all-state honors.
In boys basketball, Virgin Valley guard Cameron Jensen was named league MVP and a first-team all-state pick, and Rich Bohne took league Coach of the Year.
Moapa Valley's Dallas Larsen was named 3A state Coach of the Year, and Pirates guard Josh Thompson and forward Hayden Cooper took first-team all-state honors.
In girls basketball, Pahranagat Valley guard Halie Lewis was named 1A Southern League MVP.
■ FOOTBALL COMMITMENTS -- Canyon Springs announced five senior football players received scholarships to play at Southern, a Football Championship Subdivision school in Baton Rouge, La.
Canyon Springs coach Hunkie Cooper said safety Jamaal Martin, receiver Trey Evans, lineman Brandon Johnson, defensive back Marquon Webster and linebacker Eddie Smith IV will grayshirt for the Jaguars and be placed on full scholarship in January.
Also for the Pioneers, lineman Galyn Graham signed with Montana Tech.
Other senior football players to make recent commitments include Bonanza running back Dasean Martin (Arizona Western College), Agassi Prep running back DeVonn Porter (Chadron State, Neb.) and Coronado receiver Dylan Kaufman (Cal Lutheran).
Faith Lutheran quarterback Joe Portaro accepted a walk-on invitation from UNLV.
■ OTHER DECISIONS -- Seniors to make recent Division I commitments include Bishop Gorman boys volleyball player Bobby Houser (Cal State Northridge) and Coronado girls volleyball player Katie Gamsky (DePaul). Centennial junior soccer player Natalie Gilbertson chose Northern Arizona.
College of Southern Nevada's softball program signed Clark's Jasmine Fukuda, Durango's Samantha Juarez, and Shadow Ridge's Maria Perkins and Karla Serrano.
Durango baseball player Will Morris also signed with CSN.
UNLV received walk-on commitments from Coronado baseball player Steven Pollex and Coronado volleyball player Michell Lisowski.
