Wallace’s homer carries RedHawks, ends 51s’ eight-game winning streak
A blast from the 51s' recent past ended their eight-game winning streak Thursday night.
Brett Wallace's leadoff homer in the third inning accounted for the lone run in host Oklahoma City's 1-0 Pacific Coast League victory over Las Vegas.
Wallace, a first-round draft pick in 2008, hit .301 in 95 games with the 51s in 2010 before the Toronto Blue Jays dealt him to the Houston Astros, the RedHawks' parent club, in July of that year.
The homer was the fourth of the season for Wallace, who is batting .221 and playing third base after playing first base with Las Vegas.
Oklahoma City starter Jordan Lyles (5-0) worked in and out of difficulty for 6 2/3 innings, giving up eight hits and a walk while striking out six. The 51s left 10 runners on base, including four innings in which they left two on, and went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.
Adeiny Hechavarria went 3-for-5 for Las Vegas (18-17), which held an 8-4 edge in hits. But RedHawks closer Jose Valdez struck out Hechavarria with two outs in the ninth and the potential tying run at second base, earning his sixth save and ending Oklahoma City's seven-game skid.
Tim Redding (0-3) held the RedHawks (18-17) to one run on four hits and one walk and struck out five in six innings.
51s center fielder Anthony Gose, acquired by Toronto for Wallace, went 0-for-3 but stole his 13th base of the season.
