2014 to-do list filled with improvements at parks in Sunrise, Whitney

WETLANDS PARK TO EXPAND LOOP TRAIL, CREATE DEMONSTRATION GARDEN

Clark County Wetlands Park is working on obtaining funds to expand its loop trail this year, which will circle the entire park.

The 13-mile trail is set to connect all of the Wetlands Park trailheads, including the 34-mile River Mountains Loop Trail and the Las Vegas bicycle trail systems.

“The loop trail basically exists,” said Allison Brody, recreation program supervisor at Clark County Wetlands Park. “One-half is paved and the other half is unpaved graded dirt. The part that is graded has been impacted by the construction by one of the weirs.”

Brody said that following the construction of the weir, the park plans to seek funding to pave the southern part of the loop.

“The timeline of the project really depends on the construction of the weir and on funding,” Brody said. “Right now, we really don’t have a set date.”

The park is also in the process of purchasing 600 plants from 50 species for a planned demonstration garden next to the Nature Center.

LAS VEGAS WASH PROJECT CONSTRUCTION BEGINS

The Las Vegas Wash Project is planned to provide 4 miles of flood-control improvements to the Las Vegas and Flamingo washes in residential and commercial areas.

Construction of the project was set to start in 2014, but the first phase started five months early on Nov. 12. The first phase focused on removing 280 trees, turf and de-watering wells from the golf course.

In December, a section of trail behind Ruby Creek Drive at Sloan Lane closed to accommodate construction for the Las Vegas Wash Project. The closure is expected to last through July.

The scope of the project includes renovations from Sloan Channel to Bonanza Road, the Flamingo Wash from the Las Vegas Wash to Nellis Boulevard and the reconstruction of the Desert Rose Golf Course, 5483 Club House Drive.

SLOAN CHANNEL PIPELINE PROJECT CONTINUES

Residents living near Sloan Channel were left with offensive smells and bug-infested yards after North Las Vegas began pumping approximately 20 million gallons of wastewater daily into Clark County’s Sloan Channel more than two years ago.

As a result, the Sloan Channel Pipeline Project is scheduled to start construction this year to alleviate the situation. A pipeline is being designed to convey effluent for the city of North Las Vegas Water Reclamation Facility along Sloan Channel to the Las Vegas Wash.

The Sloan Channel Pipeline Project involves improvements along Sloan Channel from Nellis Air Force Base to Vegas Valley Drive.

Periodic closures can be expected at most cross streets at or adjacent to the channel from Judson to Sahara avenues.

Dan Kulin, spokesman for the county, said the project is expected to begin in January and end in 2015.

PROJECTS PLANNED FOR PARKS IN SUNRISE AND WHITNEY NEIGHBORHOODS

Horseman’s Park, an equestrian facility at 5800 E. Flamingo Road, is scheduled to build shade structures in its bleacher section and add additional shade covers over its stalls to protect horses from the sun. The project is estimated to cost $445,836.

Shadow Rock Park at 2650 Los Feliz St. is scheduled to resurface its dirt lot into a paved one in January for an estimated $201,750. The park also plans to renovate its dog runs, which are estimated to cost $233,050.

Old Silver Bowl Park, 5600 Weisner Way, is scheduled to install a restroom for an estimated $864,150.

Silver Bowl Park, 6800 E. Russell Road, has planned to add fencing for an estimated $1,285,000. The fencing is scheduled to be completed in February.

The Hollywood Aquatic Center, 1550 S. Hollywood Blvd., plans to add solar panels for an estimated $235,000 starting in January. “The solar panels will help the center become more financially efficient and will help create climate control,” said Jim Foreman, principal management analyst at the Clark County Parks and Recreation Department.

The Parkdale Community Center, 3200 Ferndale St., is scheduled to finish its renovation this year to build a 12,000-square-foot community center. The center is estimated to cost $5,125,000 and is expected to be completed in March.

Desert Inn Park at 3606 Vista Del Monte Drive has scheduled the installation of a new splash pad water feature, fencing and landscaping. The estimated $255,388 funding was made available through the Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act. The renovation is scheduled to be completed in October.

Paradise Park, 4775 McLeod Drive, has planned a new cover for an existing pavilion in Area B.

Sunset Park, 2601 E. Sunset Road, has planned the installation of a new restroom and concession building at the softball four-plex for an estimated $544,852. The project is expected to be completed in February. In addition, the park will add site lighting with LED fixtures at its Warm Springs side. The $67,870 project is scheduled to begin in 2014.

Winchester Park at 3130 McLeod Drive has planned a site lighting retrofit and restroom and parking lot rehabilitation for $1,444,871. The project is scheduled to be completed in May.
