American Idol: How can anyone live a meaningful life and still watch this show from start to finish

I watch American Idol, this I freely admit. But as I said last season, how could anyone watch this show without some kind of recording device.
It is slow, tedious and so very, very long.
However, if you can zip through the commercials and about 75% of the dreary content and judging, you can actually extract a measure of enjoyment out of watching the kids develop as singers.
Well, the new season has been on for a few weeks. American Idol has produced, I don't know, 10+ hours of shows. I've watched about 30 minutes of those 10+ hours ... and enjoyed it. This could be a very good crop of singers.
But I say this year what I said last year: How could anyone — anyone! — have a meaningful life and still watch this show from start to finish.
