AROUND TOWN: Free swing dancing featured at Aruba Hotel

For a different place to hang out, check out the Aruba Hotel at 1215 Las Vegas Blvd. South. It's near  the Viva Las Vegas Wedding Chapel, but if you blink, you miss it, so keep an eye out. On select nights, there is swing or salsa dancing in the theater area.

About a month and a half ago, my boyfriend and I stumbled upon this place on a Friday night, and they were hosting a swing dance competition. All the contestants were dressed in era costumes, complete with hair and makeup to match. Between rounds the dance floor was open, so we took advantage and did our best to imitate the swing dancers. We had a blast even though neither of us knew what we were doing.

A friend of mine mentioned there is hula hooping at the Aruba on First Fridays, and on Saturdays they have bands playing. There's always something different to do there, so I'd recommend just calling and speaking to one of the bartenders about their events calendar.

There is one downside to this hidden gem, though, and that's the parking availability. There is none.

Plan on getting there early if you want to park, or you can get creative and park at one of the nearby establishments. Just bring a friend or two and use the buddy system. And remember, don't drink and drive.
