AROUND TOWN: Mesquite celebrates 25 years with month of festivities
Mesquite is a favorite getaway for locals, just an hour and a half away from Las Vegas. Although Clark County is celebrating its centennial this year, the city of Mesquite was officially incorporated on May 24, 1984, making it 25 this year.
The history of Mesquite began in the mid 1800s, when the West was still being explored and the Old Spanish Trail and Mormon Road
passed through Mesquite along the Virgin River. In 1984, six Mormon families settled on the Mesquite Flat.
To celebrate, Mesquite will be hosting several events throughout the month.
On April 30 through May 2, there will be a 25th anniversary poker tournament in the Virgin River Poker room. Spend some time outside on May 2 with a Mesquite Days Parade up Mesquite Boulevard and a Sun City Mesquite Del Webb Meet & Greet Barbecue in Recreation Center Park.
Celebrate Cinco De Mayo May 5 on South Yucca Street. The city will host a family softball tournament at the Pioneer Park Complex on May 8 and 9. The Veteran’s Golf Classic tees off May 15 at the Palms Golf Course, and the Bunco Tournament to benefit the Order of the Purple Heart will take place later that day in the CasaBlanca Showroom.
On May 16, the city will celebrate Armed Forces Day with a Virgin River Armed Forces Gun Club Shoot at the Oasis Gun Club, the Armed Forces Scramble at the CasaBlanca Golf Course, Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority Armed Forces Day Reception at the Oasis Golf Club and fireworks at Recreating Center Park.
There will be a Founders Forum Essay and Photo Contest on May 19 and a historical tour at the Mesquite Senior Center on May 23.
The festivities wrap up May 25-29 with the Mesquite Amateur Golf Tournament and various golf courses in the city.
In addition, Mesquite is giving away 25 travel packages to Nevada, Arizona, Colorado and Idaho residents on its Web site. For more information, visit www.visitmesquite.com.
