Cottages of Green Valley to hold health and wellness workshop May 17

The Cottages of Green Valley, an assisted-living and memory-care facility at 2620 Robindale Road. in Henderson, will sponsor a free health and wellness workshop for residents and family members from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. May 17.
"The health and wellness issues of our residents and their family members are an on-going concern of ours," said Trudy Andrews, administrator for Cottages of Green Valley.
The program will include a representative from 24-Hour Fitness who will speak about learning proper exercise techniques for seniors.
Home Care dentist Kevin Wortham will speak from 10 to 10:30 a.m., discussing the relationship of periodontal disease to one's overall health.
Spring Mountain Sahara Behavioral Hospital's director of nursing Barbara Pieczyrak will address adverse reactions to medications from 10:30 to 11 a.m.
Mary Shapiro, president of Senior Direction LLC, a geriatric care management company, will give a speech, "Alzheimer's and Dementia: A Practical and Legal Guide for Nevada Caregivers" from 11 to 11:30 a.m.
Lauren Koutsoumbos of Bankers Life and Casualty Co. will give information from 1 to 2 p.m. about the benefits of long-term care insurance
Mark Simmons, a Care4Life staffer, will address cognitive retention therapy 2 to 2:30 p.m. He will discuss alternatives to medication when fighting memory loss.
Rafael Cosio, the business development director of Montevista Hospital, will discuss various treatment programs available at Montevista and Red Rock Behavioral Health Hospitals from 2:30 to 3 p.m., while Richard Dunbar of Davis Funeral Home and Memorial Park will present the importance of planning ahead from 3 to 3:30 p.m.
The closing presentation from 3:30 to 4 p.m. will be by Cottages of Green Valley marketing director, Mary Jo Burgher, who will help explain the differences among assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, group homes, etc. She will also be available to conduct tours.
Cottages of Green Valley, which opened in 2002, has five memory-care cottages, three assisted-living cottages and one Easy Care independent-style cottage. Residents live and eat in the same cottage with 12 other people.
