Cyclists prepare for event

Registration is under way for the 11th Tour de Summerlin, which kicks off at 7 a.m. April 21 at The Vistas Community Park, 11311 Alta Drive. This year's noncompetitive cycling event will feature 40-, 75- and 100-mile rides through Summerlin and neighboring Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. More than 500 cyclists are expected to participate in the event, making it one of the largest and most scenic cycling activities in Southern Nevada.

Registration fees range from $60-$65. To preregister, visit www.tourdesummerlin.com or call 252-8077.

Tour de Summerlin is coordinated by Randy McGhie, owner of McGhie's Ski Bike & Board. According to McGhie, Summerlin is the ideal community to host a cycling event because of its ability to attract cyclists from across the valley.

"Summerlin's abundant biking lanes, scenic views and proximity to Red Rock Canyon make it one of the best places to cycle in Las Vegas -- regardless of where you live," he said.

Summerlin's dedicated bike routes and striped bike lanes are typically 4 to 6 feet in width. Bike lanes are located on main roads throughout Summerlin and are designed to accommodate competitive and recreational riders. The community also features miles of trails that are located in open space corridors that provide respite from noise and traffic, making them a preferred route for distance cyclists and runners.

"Summerlin's infrastructure caters to outdoor enthusiasts who appreciate a healthy, active lifestyle offered in a convenient neighborhood setting," said Kevin Orrock, executive vice president of master-planned communities for The Howard Hughes Corp., developer of Summerlin. "The community is home to more than 150 miles of trails and more than 150 parks that feature dozens of athletic fields and courts. The trails and parks are located throughout the community so our residents never have to travel far to enjoy the community's outdoor amenities."
