The joy of eating at new restaurants is discovering new foods and flavors. Eating at Tipicos Centroamerica has the added benefit of learning new words. House specials include pollo frito (fried chicken), bistek encebollado (sautéed beefsteak), chuletas (pork chops) and salpicon (shredded beef, onion, radish, mint), or sit down with cena hondurena, a typical Honduran dinner. Featured seafood entrees are shrimp tostadas, tilapia with shrimp, oysters with shrimp ceviche, octopus and shrimp cocktail, and camarones al mojo de ajo (garlic shrimp). There are a dozen soups, such as Seven Season seafood, beef, snail and sopa de gallina, hen soup served only on Saturday and Sunday. Popular appetizers are fried banana with ground beef, Honduran enchiladas with ground beef, cabbage, tomato and cheese, corn tamals and fried yucca. Among the breakfast items are the Honduran breakfast (banana, sour cream, beans, avocado, eggs) and casamiento o gallo pinto, a marriage of rice, beans, sausage, bananas, sour cream and eggs. Mexican entrees include tacos, burritos, quesadillas, enchiladas and flautas. Complete the meal with flan, honey bread or banana empanadas. House specials begin at $7.95.
