ENSIGN’S ETHICS: Here’s CREW’s Letter to DOJ
July 9, 2009 - 10:25 am
Perhaps John Ensign actually dreamed he’d be able to practice his Marcel Marceau routine and return to the Senate following his recent admission he’d carried on a nine-month affair with Cindy Hampton, his former campaign staffer and ex-best friend of the politician’s wife, Darlene.
Revelations first broken by Jon Ralston on his “Face to Face” television program figure to change all that. Ralston’s interview with Doug Hampton, husband of Cindy, raised the issue of whether Ensign committed serious ethics violations near the end of is affair. Ensign paid Cindy Hampton more than $25,000 as severance when she left her job as treasurer of his political action committee and his re-election fund.
That $25,000 was never reported.
Potentially, it’s the stuff felonies are made of.
Now Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington is calling on the Department of Justice to conduct a criminal investigation of Ensign.
