Findlay Acura hosts huge NSXPO supercar event

The NSX Club of America kicked off a four-day celebration Oct. 28 at Findlay Acura in the Valley Automall, and the 14th anniversary NSXPO gathering was presented in fine form.

With more than 140 Acura NSX supercars displayed in front of the Findlay Automotive Group dealership, as well as various displays throughout the store, the event had everything going for it from a throng of fans to impressive machinery complemented by glorious weather conditions.

"This was absolutely phenomenal," said Findlay Acura General Manager James Cobbs. "We are ecstatic with the results and the people that this attracted. When you combine the most respected machinery in the automobile business with the nicest people you'll ever find, a show like this is one that will forever live in our hearts and souls ... it was a win-win for everyone involved."

From moving new cars off the lot to make room for the throng of NSX models to the rest, nobody missed a beat during the event, which required countless hours of preparation.

Danny Young, president of the local NSX Club of America chapter, concurred with Cobbs about the final result.

"We go all over the country for shows like this," beamed Young, a 49-year-old native of San Francisco, "and this one was incredible. We cannot tell you how much we appreciate the good people of Findlay Acura along with everyone else including Acura Motor Co.

"This sort of event requires a team to make everything come together, and this team was 'world series' all the way."

Young explained that previous
NSXPOs have been held in Toronto; Portland, Ore.; Columbus, Ohio; Phoenix; Napa, Calif.; and at Laguna Seca near Monterey, Calif.

"I have been to five of the NSXPOs and the one at Findlay Acura was the best," Young said.

The colorful array of machinery, people and displays drew hundreds of onlookers in a seven-hour event. The collection marked the largest NSX gathering in North America.

Ole Sorenson of Sarasota, Fla., came to Las Vegas specifically for the event.

"I love the car and the people who drive them," said Sorenson, a 60-year-old author who writes poetry and comedy. "I have the first Acura built in 1996 and I love my NSX. In fact, my car is No. 000001 and I love it. I had a '66 Corvette, a '68 Triumph TR250, a '59 Austin Healey Bug Eye Sprite -- and my Acura is the best car I have ever owned."

Once the celebration concluded, the group packed up its belongings and headed out for a long list of events leading into the giant Specialty Equipment Manufacturing Association gathering at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

After the Findlay Acura event, the NSXPO moved to several other areas in Southern Nevada. Other activities included a cruise to Lee Canyon beginning from the South Point hotel-casino starting at 7 a.m. and Midnight Mayhem at the Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

In addition, the NSXPO contingent invaded Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch in Pahrump where participants tried out the facility's 3.5-mile road course. The group attended Cars and Coffee on South Eastern Avenue and Silverado Boulevard before taking a scenic drive through Red Rock Canyon, have lunch at Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch; and then journey to Death Valley.

Festivities wrapped up with a caravan down Las Vegas Boulevard before going to Hoover Dam on Monday. The car show theme was "Beauty Is More Than Skin Deep."

The midengine all-aluminum Japanese-built NSX has drawn international acclaim since being introduced in 1990.

Now in its fifth year of existence, the local Acura NSX Club has 15 energetic members who live, eat and breathe the popular Acura product.

Findlay Acura is part of the Findlay Automotive Group founded more than 49 years ago by the late Pete Findlay whose son, Cliff, now oversees new- and used-car dealerships in Nevada, Arizona, Utah and Idaho.
