From Dead to Worse
Sookie's back!
And the supernatural communities of Louisiana are as restive as ever. In this, the eighth installment of the Southern Vampire Mysteries by Charlaine Harris, Sookie Stackhouse is once again at the mercy of vampire power plays and werewolf coups. The book reads like a transition, tying up loose ends and revealing new directions for future novels, but I enjoyed it anyway.
"From Dead to Worse" has Vampire Bill trying to re-establish himself as the front-runner in the "Who Loves Sookie More" sweepstakes, but Eric Northman, vampire sheriff, is carving out his own place in the telepathic barmaid's heart. In the meantime, Sookie's almost-boyfriend Quinn goes missing and reappears in what can only be described as traitorous circumstances. It's all fluff and whimsy streaked in blood, but sometimes that's what the summer reading list calls for.
It's safe to say that this book permanently changes Sookie's life. She meets new family and breaks with her only brother. She's forced to intentionally harm a dear friend. She ends up with two witches living in her house and she can't figure out how to deal with any of the unnatural men vying for her attentions. She might have a decent shot at coming up with a plan to sort things out if people would stop trying to kill her.
Sookie just wants some normal in her life.
As a reader, I hope she never gets it.
