City plans Giant garage sale

A giant community garage sale is scheduled from 7 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Silver Springs Recreation Center, 1951 Silver Springs Parkway. Admission is free. For more information, visit cityofhenderson.com.

Grand opening scheduled for Avellino Park

The city of Henderson and Ryland Homes plan to host a grand opening celebration for Avellino Park, 1050 Chaparral Road, from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. Mayor Andy Hafen and members of the City Council are set to join the community for the event, which is to include activities and refreshments.

The park sits on 5 acres and includes a lighted basketball court, picnic shelters, barbecues, an exercise course, open grass area, a playground, restrooms and a walking course. It was developed by Ryland Homes and constructed by Sunstate Companies through the city’s developer turnkey park program. Under the program, a developer builds a neighborhood park following city standards and then dedicates the completed park to the city for public use. The park will be maintained by the city.

Official from government watchdog group to speak at luncheon

Victor Joecks, communications director of the Nevada Policy Research Institute, is scheduled to speak at the Southern Hills Republican Women’s luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Feb. 26 at Buckman’s Grill, 2600 Hampton Road in Sun City Anthem. The institute is a watchdog group that monitors state and local government.

ROTARY CLUB plans golf tournament

The annual Swing for the Green golf tournament is scheduled for 8 a.m. March 1 at the Revere Golf Club, 2600 Hampton Road.

Hosted by the Henderson Rotary Club, the event’s proceeds are expected to benefit community projects.

The tournament costs $125 to participate as a single player and $400 for a team of four. For more information, call 702-235-7574.

AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION TO OFFER FIRST AID WORKSHOP

The American Heart Association plans a workshop on first aid techniques from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Silver Springs Recreation Center, 1951 Silver Springs Parkway.

Participants are expected to learn how to treat symptoms such as internal and external bleeding, shock, injuries, poisoning and sudden illness.

The training is $12 and is open to anyone 12 or older. To register, visit cityofhenderson.com/parks.

HENDERSON PROGRAM MATCHES VOLUNTEERS TO COMMUNITY NEEDs

The Volunteer Partnership Program through the city of Henderson matches groups and individuals needing assistance with volunteers.

Those searching for opportunities can choose from 12 categories, including clerical, education, cleanups and assistance for seniors. The program then matches each person’s skills, interests or passions with openings. For more information, visit cityofhenderson.com.

SENIOR GAMES SEEKS PARTICIPANTS

Registration for the Henderson Senior Games is scheduled to be open through March 15.

The games, which are planned for April 6-28, are open to people 50 or older. Activities include table tennis, tennis, bowling, volleyball, basketball skills and track and field. Registration is $15 per person, with additional fees for each event. For more information, call 702-267-5717.

HENDERSON SEEKS ENTRIES FOR April 6 HERITAGE PARADE

The city of Henderson has announced that the deadline for applications for entries to the Henderson Heritage Parade is March 21.

The parade is scheduled for April 6 in the Water Street District. Henderson is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year.

SUPPORT GROUP SCHEDULED FOR PEOPLE WITH LUPUS

Lupus of Nevada is scheduled to host a support meeting from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the third Saturday of each month at Superior Health Solutions, 1661 W. Horizon Ridge Parkway.

The next session is slated for March 16.

Support meetings are designed to offer emotional and educational support for those with lupus.

The meeting is free, but reservations are required.
