Henderson’s newest park scheduled to open in October
Thanks to the Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act, the city of Henderson continues to add new parks.
"Funding from the Bureau of Land Management through the Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act has enabled the city to keep pace with growth by adding new parks where they are needed most," said Shari Ferguson, assistant director of the city of Henderson's parks and recreation department.
The city of Henderson has received more than $238 million from SNPLMA, which allows it to apply for projects with a projected dollar amount.
Cornerstone Park, 1600 Wigwam Parkway, cost about $16 million and was funded through SNPLMA. It is expected to open Oct. 6.
Kim Becker, a spokeswoman with the city of Henderson's parks and recreation department, said the grand opening event is expected to be incorporated into the Southern Nevada Trails Day Celebration, formerly called National Trails Day.
Cornerstone Park is expected to include large pavilions and shade structures that can be reserved, trails, basketball courts and volleyball courts.
Becker said Horizon Crest Park, near Annet Street and Horizon Ridge Parkway, is being prepared for construction and should be completed early this fall.
"There is a lot of interest in this park because we don't have any other parks within a half-mile radius of this location," Becker said.
The 11-acre park includes a basketball court, a playground, an open turf area, a dog park, kiosks and picnic tables.
Horizon Crest Park is estimated to cost $4.57 million.
Becker said another park that is scheduled to open in the fall is Terrazza Park, on Via Antincendio near Lake Las Vegas.
The project is expected to be 5 acres and feature a roadrunner and bird theme. Becker said amenities include a basketball court, picnic tables, a playground and a small turf area.
"Two unique elements include a boardwalk that overlooks the Las Vegas Wash and an overlook that will be designed to look like a bird's nest," Becker said.
Mountain Lake Park, at Golda Way and Lake Mead Parkway, is expected to be completed in late fall.
The park, which began construction in the spring, is expected to feature bocce ball, two turf areas, picnic areas and walking paths. Becker said the project is supposed to serve as a trailhead for the River Mountains Loop Trail.
Becker said Terrazza and Mountain Lake Park are part of the Lake Mead Parkway Trail and Wetlands Trail Connections project and are funded through SNPLMA.
The site for Avellino Park, north of St. Rose Parkway between Bermuda Road and Chaparral Road, is being prepped.
"We're awaiting the final plans, so the estimated completion date has not yet been determined," Becker said.
The park will be 4.73 acres and is being built by Ryland Homes. It is expected to feature a basketball court, a playground, an open turf area and a jogging path.
Weston Hills Park is under construction near Galleria Drive and McCormick Road and is expected to be completed this winter, Becker said.
The 13.72-acre park is being built by Beazer Homes and is expected to include ball fields, lighted basketball courts, tennis courts, a dog park, an open grass area, picnic shelters and a playground.
Weston and Avellino parks are part of the city's turnkey park program, which are parks built by developers according to city standards then dedicated to the city.
"Our turnkey park program also brings tremendous value to our residents," Ferguson said. "We appreciate our strong relationships with the development community and look forward to adding two new turnkey parks."
The city is looking at future parks, some of which wouldn't be open until 2015, such as Paradise Pointe Park, at the southwest corner of Archer Glen Avenue and Horizon Ridge Parkway.
The park would be 5.65 acres and cost an estimated $3.1 million that would be funded through SNPLMA and a residential construction tax.
