‘His Other Lover’ a fascinating journey
What would you do if you thought your boyfriend was cheating on you? How far would you go to find out the truth?
In Lucy Dawson’s new book, “His Other Lover,” she takes a look at one woman’s descent into near-madness as she struggles to find out if her man is true to her or not. And it’s a fascinating journey to observe.
Mia’s life is pretty perfect. She has a nice house, a decent job and a wonderful boyfriend, Pete. All is good. Until she discovers a text on Pete’s cell phone from someone named Liz. Then thinking back, Mia ponders on Pete’s behavior of late, irritable and erratic. In her mind, Mia connects Pete’s odd behavior with the unknown Liz, and soon becomes obsessed with finding out what is going on between the two.
Mia proceeds to ransack Pete’s home office, tearing the room apart looking for clues to the affair she imagines Pete having. Then horrified at what she’s done and desperately wanting to cover up the evidence, she destroys the rest of the house, making it look like a robbery had occurred. Pete believes Mia’s story, and tries to comfort her, but when repeated texts from the mysterious Liz continue to pour onto Pete’s phone, Mia knows she must stop this other woman from totally destroying the fragile happiness she has found.
Stalking, lying and coercion are the order of the day as Mia becomes more and more irrational in her thoughts and actions. It seems she will stop at nothing in her quest for what she believes is the truth. But the truth will be as big of a shock to the reader as it is to Mia.
The saying “hell hath no fury like a woman scorned” holds very true for “His Other Lover.” Dawson has written a brilliantly smart novel that I found clever and riveting. Her portrayal of Mia as a slightly unhinged young woman is captivating, and I for one, was a little scared of her. This was a woman you would not want mad at you! This book will keep readers intrigued and on the edge of their seat until the very end.
