Homebuilders group gets new chief

The Southern Nevada Home Builders Association has named Nathaniel W. "Nat" Hodgson III as its new executive director, effective July 1.

He replaces Irene Porter, who is retiring after more than 35 years as executive director of the association that ranks as the largest, oldest organization representing the residential construction industry in Nevada.

Hodgson will be introduced at the SNHBA membership mixer set for 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday at Cili at Bali Hai Golf Club.

Hodgson, the owner of Green Serenity Homes LLC, has been very active in the association since he joined in 1998 when he was an executive with Pulte Homes.

He served as president in 2010 and also was a first vice president and second vice president. He has served as a member and chairman of several major committees that focused on codes, energy conservation, utilities and off-sites, quality assurance, community planning and development, legislative and green building. He also served on the association's board of directors and executive committee.

He received the Builder Member of the Year Award in 2006 for outstanding service to the association and the industry. He also received a prestigious Spike Award for his successful efforts to recruit new members to the association.

As a member of the association's Green Building Committee in the mid-2000s, he was instrumental in the formation of the Southern Nevada Green Building Partnership, a joint program of SNHBA and the Green Building Initiative of Portland, Ore.

Pulte Homes was the first major builder to enroll in the program and produce verifiable, certified green homes.

He served four years on the Nevada State Contractors Board following his appointment to the board by Gov. Jim Gibbons in October 2008, and reappointment by Gov. Brian Sandoval in 2010.

"As the new executive director, my primary goal is to continue to lead the association and the industry back to recovery after this severe economic downturn," Hodgson said. "I plan to remain very involved in the issues that are critical to our existence and resolve some ongoing problems, such as low appraisals, reasonable building codes, streamlining the entitlement and plans-approval process, rising fees and costs, and, of course, the ongoing construction defect litigation epidemic in this community, which has hurt businesses, homebuyers and homeowners."

A native of Maryland, Hodgson served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the 1980s, advancing from an engine mechanic to a crew chief.

He worked for McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Co., for nearly six years, beginning in October 1986 as a quality assurance inspector, a supervisor of quality assurance, and finally, director of quality assurance. He was responsible for the inspection process of the MD-80 assembly line and then the MD-11 Tri-jet assembly line.

He was hired by Pulte Homes in 1993 as a superintendent in Las Vegas. Over the years, he was promoted to senior project superintendent, construction and service manager, director of construction, and finally, vice president of construction and customer service.

He left Pulte in May 2011. During his tenure, Pulte Homes in Las Vegas received numerous top awards in the prestigious, annual J.D. Power and Associates New Home-Builder Customer Satisfaction studies. After Pulte, he served as division president of Loftco, a commercial and residential framing and finishing carpentry company serving Arizona and Nevada until March of this year.

Founded in 1953 by 12 local homebuilders and incorporated with the state of Nevada in 1954, the Southern Nevada Home Builders Association has 250 members who work in all aspects of the homebuilding industry. It is the local affiliate of the National Association of Home Builders based near Washington, D.C.
