Las Vegas boy moves to semifinals of National Spelling Bee

For the second year, Dakota Jones has reached the semifinals of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

The 14-year-old eighth grade student at Hyde Park Middle School in Las Vegas will be one of 50 contestants to battle Thursday in the knockout phase of the 84th Bee that will be televised live on ESPN (7 a.m. to 10 a.m. PDT).

To reach the semifinals, competitors needed to correctly spell two words given them during two rounds on stage at the National Harbor in Maryland. They also could misspell only two of 25 words on a written test taken yesterday.

Jones hopes to survive to the finals that will be televised live on ESPN Thursday evening (5:30 to 7 p.m. PDT)
