Las Vegas council OKs tavern and shop complex in old downtown motel
A former hotel on a downtrodden stretch of Fremont Street will soon be home to trendy bars and retail shops.
On Wednesday the city council unanimously approved four special use permits to allow conversion of the shuttered 69-room Ferguson’s Motel into a retail and tavern complex.
The applicant is an entity of the Downtown Project, the $350 million urban renewal project backed by Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh.
Attorney Todd Kessler told the council the idea is to retain the original feel of the old structure but update it with modern amenities.
“It is a gem in our eyes. We are going to keep it that way,” Kessler said.
He said the goal is to have the property at 1028 Fremont Street open for business in the first quarter of 2014.
