Man accused of burglary, feeding family dog broken glass

A 21-year-old Oakland, Calif., man was arrested Wednesday after police said he and an accomplice broke into a home in August and then lured the homeowner's dog into eating broken glass.

Valdo Diaz, 21, was being held on suspicion of burglary and animal cruelty, SF Gate reported. On August 28, two men smashed through a sliding back door of a home on the 40800 block of Amapola Drive in Fremont, police said.

The two made off with an undisclosed amount of jewelry and cash. Police said on the way out, one of the men tossed dog food among a pile a broken glass. The dog, Marlie, began eating the food and glass and suffered cuts to its mouth.

Diaz is expected in court Thursday. The dog was treated for her injuries.
