MOVIES: CineVegas”Area 52′ lands at Onyx Theatre

Calling all cult movie mavens: Weird makes the world go round at CineVegas' new "Area 52" screening series, which brings back selections from the festival's annual midnight-movie section for four Sunday nights at the Onyx Theatre.
Kicking off the series Feb. 22: director Jim Finn’s "Interkosmos," from the 2006 festival, which chronicles a secret (and utterly make-believe) Soviet-East German space project. Rounding out the program: shorts from local filmmaker Tom Barndt, whose films have played at both CineVegas and the Sundance Film Festival.
Screenings will be held at 9 p.m. Sundays through March 15, preceded by 8:30 p.m. receptions. Tickets are $7 each and may be purchased at the Onyx, located at 953 E. Sahara Ave., Suite 16, inside The Rack in Commercial Center. More information is available online at www.cinevegas.com/area52.
The series continues March 1 with cult director Craig Baldwin's "Mock-Up on Mu" (which played last year's CineVegas), an obsessive found-footage "collage narrative" that intertwines the lives of, among others, rocket fuel inventor Jack Parson, new age sex leader Marjorie Cameron and Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard.
On March 8, it's James Fotopoulos’ "Back Against the Wall" (a 2002 selection), about a panicky guy, his lingerie-model girlfriend — and a friend who likes empty bottles, heavy guns and, perhaps, his girlfriend. And on March 15, the series features "Viva" (from the 2007 CineVegas), a '70s-style sexploitation flick from director Anna Biller — complete with nudist camps, hippies, orgies, bisexuality, drugs and more.
