A toddler died May 16 after falling into a backyard swimming pool at a home in the 2900 block of Bassler Street. The child was given CPR and transported to North Vista Hospital by ambulance. Detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the child's death. At this time, no charges have been filed. This is the first report of a child drowning in North Las Vegas this year.

EARLY VOTING planned

The North Las Vegas Municipal General Election is scheduled for June 7. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Early voting will take place through Friday. Any registered voter living in North Las Vegas can vote by mail. A written request for a mail ballot must be received by 5 p.m. today in the Clark County Registrar of Voters office. For more information, visit clarkcountynv.gov/vote.

FOURTH OF JULY CONTEST

Through June 14, Liberty Mutual Insurance is hosting the "Bring Back the 4th" online contest, which allows cities nationwide to compete for one of 10 $10,000 grants to support official Fourth of July celebrations.

NORTH LAS VEGAS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE schedules COMMUNITY EVENTS

NV Energy and Southwest Gas are scheduled to host a workshop from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at UNLV's student union, 4505 S. Maryland Parkway, about the benefits of a solar hot water system. Utility customers are invited to meet with company representatives to discuss the incentive programs offered on this energy efficient technology.

An eight-hour course that covers the basics of how to purchase a home, pitfalls, inspections and insurance is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. June 8 at 1849 Civic Center Drive. With budget cuts and belt tightening, the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension is scheduled to offer a one-day class about the "Nuts and Bolts of Grant Writing." OPEN HOUSE TO HELP THOSE FACING CANCER

The Nevada Cancer Institute plans to host a special open house from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at its main campus, 1 Breakthrough Way (near Town Center Drive and the Las Vegas Beltway).

It will include workshops, activities and resources for cancer survivors, their families, friends and supporters. The event is free and will celebrate those who have faced cancer and won. Workshops include yoga, meditation and nutrition. Expect craft activities for the whole family. Survivors are invited to share their personal stories in a special scrapbook. Regency Centers, a nationally owned developer of grocery-anchored and community shopping centers, has leased 2,925 square feet at Deer Springs Town Center, at North 5th Street and the Las Vegas Beltway, to McHenry's ATA Martial Arts, which is slated to open in August.

Day camp registrations and sales of Sizzlin' Summer passes, which provide four months of unlimited YMCA access, are now under way at the Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA, 4141 Meadows Lane, and the SkyView YMCA, 3050 E. Centennial Parkway.

Y day camp for kids 5 to 15 runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., June 13 to Aug. 26. The Y provides free care for campers from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Camp includes weekly themes and activities such as swimming, arts and crafts, group games and character development activities. Weekly camp prices range from about $100 to $200, and a daily drop-in rate of $45 is offered. No one is turned away because of an inability to pay. Financial assistance is available.

Sizzlin' Summer passes are on sale through July. The pass is good for four months from the purchase date and can be used at all locations. The new SkyView YMCA is scheduled to open Wednesday at 3050 E. Centennial Parkway. The first 250 SkyView members will receive a backpack filled with Y gear and more than $150 in free offers, including a free wellness coaching session and the choice of either a free week of camp or free swim lessons.

NEVADA DESERT MERMAIDS TO PERFORM

The Nevada Desert Mermaids synchronized swimming team plans to perform at Pavilion Center Pool, 101 S. Pavilion Center Drive, Saturday. The event is free for spectators.

NORTH LAS VEGAS TRAFFIC TO BE DIVERTED ON BELTWAY FOR BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION

Traffic on the Las Vegas Beltway at North 5th Street between Losee Road and Aliante Parkway will be diverted for six months. Both westbound travel lanes will be redirected onto the new North 5th Street ramps to get traffic off and on the main line beltway. No westbound access will be provided to North 5th Street to the south, to and from the beltway, in order to construct the North 5th Street Bridge.

Eastbound traffic will remain diverted to the street's ramps. Construction is part of an $11.8 million project that completes the interchange at North 5th Street and is expected to be completed by fall.

FINE ARTS COMPETITION on DISPLAY

Each year, the city of Las Vegas Arts Commission and the city of Las Vegas sponsor the Celebrating Life! fine arts competition to recognize the talents of Las Vegas artists 50 or older. The contest was held May 10-11.

The exhibition will be displayed at the Charleston Heights Arts Center, 800 S. Brush St., through June 30.

Artists whose works are not selected for the 2011 Celebrating Life! exhibition will have the option to display their submissions in the Salon de Refusés exhibit in the Charleston Heights Arts Center Gallery. This exhibit will remain on display through June 8. Award-winning pieces from the 2011 Celebrating Life! exhibit will travel to the City Hall Bridge Gallery to be displayed July 7 through Aug. 25.
