Northern valley locations offering community assistance for the holidays

The days are shorter, the leaves are falling, and there’s an extra chill in the air. For many, it is a sign that Thanksgiving is just around the corner — a time for family and friends to gather, feast and count their blessings. Others aren’t so lucky as they struggle to make ends meet.

In the spirit of the holiday, North View takes a look at places offering extra assistance, food or those that are in need of volunteers.

James Seastrand Helping Hands of North Las Vegas, 3640 N. 5th St., Suite 130, hosts the Senior Necessities Program, which is set to offer a bag of nonperishable food and a paper bag of goods once a month for delivery or pick up to seniors 60 or older. To participate in the program, seniors must be disabled and receive an income of 150 percent or less than the state poverty guideline, which is less than $972.50 per month for a one-person household, $1,310.83 per month for a two-person household and $1,649.17 per month for a three-person household, according to nvaging.net/grants/poverty.htm.

The program seeks volunteers to transport seniors to medical appointments and other necessary errands.

The organization is also set to host a food bank from 8 to 10 a.m. or until the food runs out. Participants must bring a photo identification to register.

For more information or to donate, visit jshhnlv.org or call 702-649-7853.

Canyon Ridge Christian Church is set to host Fill a Box/Feed a Family from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 25 at 6200 W. Lone Mountain Road. Families in need of extra assistance can pick up a box with a Thanksgiving meal that includes a turkey, sides and a dessert.

The church is also set to host RUN AS YOU ARE 5K: Feed the Need at 9 a.m. Nov. 22.

The cost is $40 for in-person registration from 3 to 6 p.m. Nov. 21. All proceeds from the event are to benefit Three Square food bank. Visit bit.ly/runasyouare.

For more information, call 702-658-2722.

Deep Roots Christian Church is in need of volunteers to prepare 20 Thanksgiving family baskets Nov. 23 at 4161 N. Rancho Drive.

The following donations are being accepted: turkeys or hams, coolers, corn, green beans, cranberry sauce, yams, olives, stuffing, pies, bread rolls, aluminum foil, plastic wrap and can openers.

“We will be helping a lot of single-parent households,” said the Rev. Brent Thomas Lively. “We’ve been doing this for years. Some people just need a little encouragement and help during the Thanksgiving holiday.”

For the event’s time and more information, call Lauren Henderson at 702-638-0205, or the church at 702-395-9394.

The First Thai-Lao Presbyterian Church of Las Vegas plans to host a Thanksgiving potluck-style dinner and auction to benefit the Westminster Presbyterian Church at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 23 at 4601 W. Lake Mead Blvd.

The church is also slated to host a Thanksgiving lunch at noon Nov. 27.

“Anyone is invited to come,” said church member Vertito Bly. “The lunch will be a mixture of traditional American food with some Thai (influence).”

In addition, a food bank is scheduled at 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays.

Olive Crest Family Resource Center, 3825 W. Cheyenne Ave., No. 604, provides support and assistance with basic needs, such as food and household items.

The center also accepts baby items (clothing, food, formula, diapers, etc.), adult and new and gently used children’s clothing, nonperishable food items and hygiene products as donations.

“We’re not income-based; our only requirement is that you live within the assigned ZIP codes located on our website,” said Angela Phillips, program manager. “We’re also not a weekly food pantry. Our goal is to help people change their life and create self-sufficiency. We do that through looking at their current situation and finding out what we can change.”

The center is open by appointment from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

For more information, visit olivecrest.org or call 702-685-3459.

Macedonia Outreach for Social Enrichment Services, a community development corporation, is slated to host a food pantry from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursdays at 2600 Clayton St.

New clients must bring a government-issued photo identification card with current address and a food stamp authorization letter or a government-issued identification with current address for each resident of the household.

For minor children, adults may bring a birth certificate or court documents listing the name of the adult resident of a household in lieu of the government-issued identification.

The organization also accepts a lease agreement or rental receipt for address verification.
