Oliver Stone and ‘The Obama Disappointment’

I know I'm not the only conservative who loves Oliver Stone movies. I love them even when I know before I go in the theater that I'm not going to hate the political bias.

He makes a damn fine movie, however, as anyone who has ever seen "Platoon," "Scarface" or "On Any Given Sunday" can attest.

But let's be clear, if you are a liberal politician and you have Oliver Stone on your back slapping you up and about your head, you know you've failed.

And perhaps that will be the undoing of Barack Obama and his dreadful reign of failure and blame. With a week to go before Election Day, there's deep disappointment with Barack Obama.

He is certainly less popular than ever at my cocktail parties. But more damning is the exit polling for early voting. It clearly shows a trend of diminished excitement for Obama this election than in 2008.

Oliver Stone has a book out today. And to say that his excitement is also diminished for Obama is an understatement. Here's a sampling of the book from the website Politico.

"'The country Obama inherited was indeed in shambles, but Obama took a bad situation and, in certain ways, made it worse …[R]ather than repudiating the policies of Bush and his predecessors, Obama has perpetuated them.

Obama’s election 'felt like a kind of expiation for the sins of a nation whose reputation had been sullied, as we have shown throughout this book, by racism, imperialism, militarism, nuclearism, environmental degradation and unbridled avarice.'”

And on health care, what many consider Obama's biggest accomplishment (or failure), Stone says:

“Obama’s failure to articulate a progressive vision was also apparent in the fight over health reform, which was to have been his signature initiative…Obama’s health care reform effort, marked by the inability to even refute Republican charges of death panels, was so unpopular that it became an albatross around the necks of Democrats in the 2010 election.”

We'll see next week whether Stone's disappointment extends to the general electorate.

In the meanwhile, win or lose I hope Stone does "The Obama Disappointment" movie. Kevin Costner can play Axelrod and, I don't know, how about Susan Sarandon as Obama.  Think about it, big guy -- a woman playing a black man with no huevos. Groundbreaking! Oscar!

PS: If you missed Stone's latest flick last summer on the marijuana trade in SoCal ("Savages") I highly recommend it.
