‘Pike Point’ full of engaging characters

How can a book that is written by an author in Minnesota about Minnesota be relevant anywhere else in the country?
When that book is as good as Greg Suhonen’s “Pike Point and The Good Lord’s Earth.”
Suhonen invites his readers to experience the beauty and majesty of Minnesota through his descriptive words and lively story. It made this Southern gal feel right at home.
The story revolves around the Maki family. Paavo Maki, a native of Finland, immigrated to the United States when he was 18. He worked hard to save his money and buy a prime piece of property in 1922. That property was known as Pike Point on Lost Woman Lake, near what would become the Boundary Waters Canoe Area National Park.
The Maki family built a resort on the land, and for years have run a successful business. Grandson Ray Maki has lived and worked at the resort for all of his 33 years, and expected the summer to come not to be any different than past summers. That is until he meets Angie Holter, a pretty nurse up to visit her parents. Then Ray’s world — and heart — turns upside down. This summer would soon become one both Ray and Angie would remember for the rest of their lives.
Suhonen’s characters in “Pike Point” are warm and engaging, from impish Grandpa Paavo to tenderhearted mom Ellie, even down to curmudgeonly old Skinny, the brilliant wood carver/hermit. These are people you want to meet and become friends with.
An outstanding accomplishment for the debut author.
Whether you are from up in the Cold Blue North, down in the sunny South or in the Nevada desert — if you’re looking for a great book filled with family values, adventure and love, look no further than “Pike Point And The Good Lord’s Earth.”
