Ombudsman offering Basics for Board Members class

The ombudsman invites homeowners, residents and board members to learn about the basic business of running an association at Basics for Board Members, which will be held Feb. 11, at the Bradley Building, 2501 E. Sahara Ave. The event is from 1 to 4 p.m.

The class will feature segments giving plain-language explanations of fiduciary duty, meetings, elections and recordkeeping, as well as an outline of state services. Handouts will summarize association business in a concise format.

Speakers will include Lindsay Waite, ombudsman for owners in common-interest communities and condominium hotels, and Nicholas Haley, education and information officer. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions.

"HOAs (homeowners associations) rely on volunteers who are willing to learn a complex job for which there is no formal training," Haley said. "The purpose of this class is to give attendees a summary of what is required to serve on a board, and how they can protect the interests of their HOA and themselves."

Seating is limited and attendees are encouraged to register in advance. Call Haley at 486-4480 or 1-877-829-9907 or email at nhaley@red.state.nv.us.
