Reid scores high marks with NAACP

Who said Sen. Harry Reid had a race problem? The NAACP has come out with its annual report card on Congress, and the Senate majority leader was scored at 95 percent.

Reid was graded with an A by the civil rights organization in a report that comes several weeks after Reid found himself in hot water after it was reported he made a racially awkward remark about President Barack Obama's skin color and his dialect during the 2008 election.

The organization ranked senators on their support for the NAACP position on 21 key votes last year. Ranking for House members were based on 25 votes.

The votes included tallies on health care reform, the extension of unemployment benefits, predatory lending curbs and the stimulus bill. Senators were graded on whether they voted for Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor and whether they voted to confirm Hillary Rodham Clinton as Secretary of State.

Democrats generally tended to score higher than Republicans. Republican Sen. John Ensign scored 14. Rep. Shelley Berkley, a Democrat, was graded at 92 while fellow Democrat Rep. Dina Titus was given a 96. Republican Rep. Dean Heller was graded at 20.

The full report is here.

Reid sided with the NAACP on every one of the association's key issues except gun control. In that vote, the NAACP was trying to kill an amendment to limit the powers of the District of Columbia to control gun ownership within its border. Reid voted for the amendment.

Reid's scrambled to apologize to Obama, members of Congress and civil rights leaders last month after it was reported he commented during the 2008 election about Obama's "light skin" and how did not speak with a "Negro dialect."
