Saving babies in utero

Here's your feel-good story of the weekend. It demonstrates how far we've come in medicine and, I must admit, amazes in a good way an old coot like me, TCLV.

Lyna Gonzales was just a little over three months old when an ultrasound picture showed a large tumor growing out of her mouth. You can imagine the horror of her parents.

They looked for an answer and found Dr. Ruben Quintero who operated on Lyna in utero. It was a first and it was a complete success. Lyna was born uneventfully and is now, 20 months later, a zesty kiddo like any other her age.

You can take this story to make a point about our antiquated abortion laws, which allow potential kids like Lyna to become ho-hum casualties of an immoral modern era that places convenience over the dignity of every human life. But, I'm going to choose to leave this story as an example of how wonderful life is when our first instinct is to save it.

Dr. Quintero and his team are saints. Here's to you, doc. Simply amazing.
