Department of Transportation to gather public input
The Nevada Department of Transportation plans to host a public information meeting from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Ballroom A at the East Las Vegas Community/Senior Center, 250 N. Eastern Ave.
It will regard a possible alternative to fuel taxes for funding transportation projects and roadway maintenance in the future. Attend at your convenience anytime. Representatives will be available to discuss the Vehicle Miles Traveled Fee Study with attendees individually and answer questions.
Comments may be submitted for the public record in writing at the meeting or verbally to a court reporter, who will be available throughout the meeting. Written or e mail comments also will be accepted through Aug. 12. For more information, visit vmtfeenv.com.

Presentation on challenges facing Christians set for Sahara West Library
The Ichthus Institute is scheduled to present Standing for God in a Godless World from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the Sahara West Library multipurpose room, 9600 W. Sahara Ave.
The topic will cover the challenges facing Christians today. Admission is free. Donations will be accepted.

Westside Newcomers Club to meet
The Westside Newcomers Club, a social club for women who have lived in the area for 10 years or less or have had a life-changing event such as retirement, plans to host a coffee event for prospective members in the social hall at Desert Spring United Methodist Church, 120 N. Pavilion Center Drive, at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 3.
The coffees are held the first Wednesday of every month. A luncheon with a program is planned for the second Wednesday of each month.

Dive In Movie night coming to Pavilion Center Pool
A Dive In Movie Night is planned for guests of all ages from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 5 at Pavilion Center Pool, 101 S. Pavilion Center Drive.
Take a dip in the pool or lounge on a raft or in a deck chair while watching a movie on the big screen. Light refreshments will be provided. All pool rules apply. The family movie has not yet been determined.

Star party set for Aug. 6 at Red Rock Canyon Visitor Center
An Astronomy in the Park Star Party is planned for 7 p.m. Aug. 6 at the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area Visitor Center.
The evening is set to begin with a presentation on meteor showers and storms. Immediately following the presentation, telescope viewing of the moon and Saturn will take place just after sunset, followed by deep-sky viewing of galaxies, nebulae and star clusters as the sky darkens. A laser-guided What's Up Tonight tour of the night sky is scheduled for 9 p.m.
The free event is sponsored by the Las Vegas Astronomical Society. Parking and access to video-assisted viewing of the night sky is available for those in wheelchairs.

Calendar uses award-winning photos of Red Rock Canyon
Friends of Red Rock Canyon has created a limited edition, 16-month calendar featuring the award-winning photography of the 2011 Red Rock Canyon Photo Contest.
The calendar features the sights of Red Rock Canyon and runs through December 2012.
The cost is $15. Reserve your calendar by Sunday, and it will be shipped by Aug. 15. Shipping is $3.95 per order.

Junior League of Las Vegas accepting membership applications
The Junior League of Las Vegas Inc. is accepting applications for new members for the 2011- 12 provisional class year.
Members will be participating in a variety of projects and outreach programs related to the group's main focus of health and wellness, and other ongoing projects such as education grants.
Last year, JLLV's 400-plus members devoted more than 12,165 volunteer hours at an estimated value of more than $250,000. In addition, JLLV provided more than $100,000 in financial support to the Las Vegas community with more than $1,800,000 in cash, reserves and investments.

NV Energy Expo set for Aug. 13 at Cashman Center
The Senior Energy Assistance Expo is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 13 at the Cashman Center, 850 Las Vegas Blvd. North. The event is free to the public.
At this event, seniors can receive energy assistance through Project REACH, an energy assistance program administered by the United Way of Southern Nevada, make payment arrangements and receive help through a variety of social service programs.
Project REACH helps adults 62 or older who are medically fragile, vulnerable or U.S. Reserve and National Guard members who meet program guidelines.
Customers must bring a valid Nevada driver license or state ID, past due NV Energy bills and proof of income. Anyone who has received energy assistance in the previous 12 months is not eligible to receive assistance but can take advantage of other resources offered at the event.
Nonprofit, government agencies and other utility representatives will be available to provide energy assistance, discuss weatherization options, provide energy education, conservation and rebate information and social services such as food bank, housing, medical and rental assistance.

The Academy of Nevada Ballet Theatre announces its second session of summer classes for a variety of ages and levels Aug. 8 -18.
The new Story Ballet class is for children 3 to 5 and 6 to 8. The annual Summer Intensive class is for dancers 9 to 19.
Adult drop-in classes also are available, including the new Salsacize class taught by 24 Hour Fitness instructor Enrique Lugo and Barre Only, taught by NBT company dancer Sarah Fuhrman.
