Summerlin promotes active lifestyle

According to Kevin Orrock, top division executive for The Howard Hughes Corp., developer of Summerlin, the community was created to promote an active lifestyle through amenities including parks, trails, golf courses, swimming pools and a variety of sport facilities. "The result is award-winning -- literally," Orrock said.

The Howard Hughes Corp. has received more than 100 awards and special recognitions since Summerlin's inception 20 years ago, such as the trail system, which earned The Howard Hughes Corp. the inaugural American Trails Developer award in 2008.

"The 150-plus mile Summerlin trail system is undoubtedly one of our most popular recreational amenities," Orrock said. "On any given day, hundreds of residents of all ages can be found walking, running or cycling on the trails."

In addition to the trails, Summerlin is home to nearly 500 acres of open park space that houses basketball, tennis, volleyball, bocce, horseshoe and shuffleboard courts; baseball, soccer and football fields; playground areas; swimming pools and interactive water features.

Many of the community's parks are programmed by The Summerlin Council, the nonprofit arm of the Summerlin Community Association dedicated to the social, cultural, education and recreational enrichment of residents. The Summerlin Council coordinates a variety of annual health and fitness classes, youth sports camps and athletic leagues.

Several of the valley's most active leagues are housed in Summerlin, including youth baseball, soccer and basketball as well as softball and tennis for adults.

Summerlin also is home to nine golf courses, including the state's only two tournament players club courses. The list of Summerlin golf course designers include Jack Nicklaus, Bobby Weed, Arnold Palmer and Schmidt-Curley.

"Summerlin residents have immediate access to a broad range of recreational options designed to accommodate all ages, interests and skill levels," Orrock said. "Plus, the community's close proximity to Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area makes it a true recreational haven for those who appreciate an active outdoor lifestyle."

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area encompasses 200,000 acres and features more than 2,000 climbing routes. It is considered one of the top five climbing destinations in the United States and is home to nearly two dozen hiking trails as well as a 13-mile scenic loop for both cyclists and motorists.

Developed by The Howard Hughes Corp., an affiliate of General Growth Properties Inc., Summerlin began to take shape in 1990.

Located along the western rim of the Las Vegas Valley, Summerlin encompasses 22,500 acres with 9,000 still remaining to accommodate future growth within the master plan, including the community's urban core of Summerlin Centre.

There are more than 98,000 residents with access to amenities that include more than 150 neighborhood and village parks, more than 150 completed miles of the Summerlin trail system, nine golf courses, a dozen houses of worship, shopping centers, medical and cultural facilities, business parks, 25 public and private schools.

Homes are available in a variety of styles -- from single-family homes to townhomes, condominiums and lofts -- priced from the mid $200,000s to more than $2 million.

Custom-home sites in The Ridges are priced from the $500,000s. Luxury apartment homes offer monthly rents starting from the $900s.
