DASH & SPLASH SET FOR SATURDAY

Dash & Splash, a 1.5-mile run followed by a 300-meter swim, is planned for 7:30 a.m. Saturday at Veterans Memorial Park and Pavilion Center Pool, 101 N. Pavilion Center Drive.

There is no age limit, but participants must be able to swim 100 meters successfully. The cost is $15 with preregistration and $20 on event day.

YOGA WITH ROVER EVENT SET FOR SATURDAY

The seventh annual Yoga with Rover event is planned for 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Yoga Sanctuary, 7915 W. Sahara Ave., Suite 101.

Bring your dog to stretch with Amy Herzlich, a yoga lover and owner of Innovative Pet Therapy, at this special class designed for participants and their dogs. Learn yoga poses and massage techniques modified for canines that will enhance your dog's well-being and bond with your dog while helping it to relax, increase circulation and flexibility.

Dogs must be dog- and people-friendly, fully inoculated and housebroken. Registration is required.

A minimum donation of $25 is requested. All proceeds will go to Heaven Can Wait Sanctuary.

RED ROCK CANYON PHOTO CONTEST ENTRIES ON DISPLAY THROUGH AUG. 10

More than 100 photos from the 2012 annual Red Rock Canyon Photo Contest are on display through Aug. 10 at the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area Visitor Center Gallery, 1000 Scenic Loop Drive.

The 2013 Visions of Red Rock Calendar is available at friendsofredrockcanyon. org (click on "store" and "books") and at the Elements Gift Store in the Visitor Center. The calendar features 14 images of Red Rock Canyon entered in the 2012 contest.

The cost is $15 and $12.75 for members.

JEWISH GENEALOGY SOCIETY TO MEET

The Jewish Genealogy Society of Southern Nevada plans its monthly meeting for 1 p.m. Sunday at the Sahara West Library, 9600 W. Sahara Ave.

The speaker is scheduled to be Daniel Horowitz of myheritage.com. He will speak on sharing and preserving data in the digital age.

The public is welcome, and there is no charge to attend meetings. The group meets at 1 p.m. the third Sunday of each month.

FREE LUNCH OFFERED FOR CHILDREN AT DURANGO HILLS YMCA

Three YMCA of Southern Nevada locations are offering free lunch to youths 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, including the Durango Hills Community Center YMCA, 3521 N. Durango Drive.

The YMCA is participating in the summer food service program, a continuation of the National School Lunch Program, a federally assisted meal program providing nutritionally balanced, low-cost or free lunches to students.

Youths 18 or younger can receive a free lunch through Aug. 24 (except July 4), Mondays through Fridays at the YMCA. Preregistration is not required.

SEMINAR ON TOMATIS METHOD PLANNED AT BRAIN SOLUTIONS INC.

NIGHT HIKE PLANNED AT RED ROCK CANYON

A night hike is planned for Monday at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. No moon will rise that evening, making it a good time to view the stars. Join the ranger on this three-mile hike to learn the summer constellations and some of the famous stories behind them.

Participants are asked to bring a flashlight. The hike is rated moderate and is for those 12 or older.

RANGERS PLAN JUNE 22 CLEANUP AT RED ROCK CANYON

Join rangers in an effort to help keep Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area clean and beautiful during a cleanup scheduled for 8 a.m. June 22. Volunteers are needed to help clean up trash from the trails. Easy hiking is planned, and all ages are welcome. The cleanup is expected to last about two hours.

SUPERPAWN ANNOUNCES SUPERHEROES CONTEST

SuperPawn announces its SuperPawn SuperHeroes contest to recognize outstanding local volunteers who may win the opportunity to present $1,000 from SuperPawn to a local nonprofit organization of their choice. The community is encouraged to nominate exceptional individuals who align with the program's mission statement:

Each of the three grand prize winners will receive the opportunity to present a $1,000 donation from SuperPawn to the charity of their choice at a special lunch hosted by SuperPawn, a recognition plaque and a $250 Visa gift card.

The individual who nominates the winner will also receive a $100 Visa gift card from SuperPawn.

TRANSPORTATION COMMISSION ANNOUNCES FARE CHANGES

The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada recently approved changes to some of the Las Vegas Valley's transit fares. Fares will be adjusted for Strip routes, paratransit service and reduced-fare passes. Regular fares for residential routes will not increase. The decision also changes some of the transportation commission's policies governing paratransit service.

Residential routes, including Centennial, Westcliff Airport, Boulder Highway, Henderson, and Downtown and Sahara Express routes, are introducing a 15-day pass for $34, which will replace the five-day pass currently offered, and changing the reduced-fare discount offered on residential transit routes to a flat 50 percent discount for all passes. Reduced-fare day passes will cost $2.50, reduced-fare 15-day passes will cost $17, and reduced-fare monthly passes will cost $32.50. Reduced-fare passes are available for youths 6 to 17, seniors 60 or older and persons with disabilities. These changes will be effective Sept. 30.

Paratransit service changes are replacing the $80 unlimited-ride monthly pass with a 46 single-rides coupon book for $80 or a 22 single-rides coupon book for $40. Only one coupon book may be purchased per calendar month, and books expire at the end of each calendar month. Passengers who wish to take additional rides will be charged the $3 single-ride paratransit fare. This change will be effective in July 2013.

Changes also are aligning the paratransit service area with the area served by the transportation commission's regular transit service, within the guidelines of the ADA. The transportation commission will no longer provide service to clients who live beyond the service area. As of July 2015, approximately 480 clients will have to make their way into the service area in order to travel on paratransit. Additionally, paratransit service hours will be aligned with regular transit service. As a result, service will be eliminated in some neighborhoods in the overnight hours. This change will be effective in July 2015.

Strip & Downtown Express Service and Deuce on the Strip Service changes are increasing the fixed-route Strip 24-hour all-access pass from $7 to $8 and increasing the fixed-route Strip two-hour all-access pass from $5 to $6. Strip fares are set to change Sept. 30. Locals who purchase residential passes may use them on any route, including the Strip, at no additional charge.

FIND ALTERNATIVE CAMPING SITES AT RED ROCK CANYON

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area's developed campground - Red Rock Campground - is scheduled to temporarily close through Aug. 30 during this low-usage period.

Red Rock Campground is in the conservation area approximately two miles east of the Visitor Center on state Route 159 (West Charleston Boulevard) and is the only developed campground within the conservation area.

Visitors are encouraged to take advantage of the many other camping opportunities in the area, including: backcountry camping at Red Rock Canyon with a permit, 515-5050; Valley of Fire State Park, 397-2088; Lake Mead National Recreation Area, 293-8990 or 293-8906; Death Valley National Park, 760-786-3200; Mojave National Preserve, 760-252-6100; U.S. Forest Service Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, 515-5400; Spencer W. Kimball Scout Reservation, 968-8138; Potosi Pines Camp, 875-1980; and the Clark County Shooting Park, 455-2000.

Camping is allowed on Bureau of Land Management land outside of the Las Vegas Valley for up to two weeks without charge. Popular primitive (no facilities) sites include Bitter Spring Back Country Byway, Gold Butte Back Country Byway, Knob Hill, Virgin Mountains, Christmas Tree Pass and Logandale Trails System.

The BLM reminds residents that summer is the dry season and to be careful with campfires.

LAW FIRM PLANS FREE SEMINARS ON BUSINESS-RELATED ISSUES

The city of Las Vegas and attorneys from the law firm Lionel Sawyer & Collins plan a series of free seminars designed to acquaint local operators with business-related legalities.

The city's Economic and Urban Development Department is scheduled to host six seminars from June through September at the Historic Fifth Street School, 401 S. Fourth St. Check-ins are set to begin at 7:45 a.m. for each seminar.
