Las Vegas Wash Meeting
set for Wednesday
Clark County Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani and Las Vegas City Councilman Bob Coffin plan to be on hand for an open house/town hall meeting scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Mendoza Elementary School, 2000 S. Sloan Lane. The meeting concerns improvements to Las Vegas Wash and the redesign of the Desert Rose Golf Course where the Sloan Channel, the Flamingo Wash and the Las Vegas Wash converge. The public is invited to provide input, see displays and discuss the project with project staff members.

Teen Pregnancy Workshop planned
The Southern Nevada Teen Pregnancy Prevention Coalition plans to host a series of free workshops for parents and guardians who want to develop skills to talk with their pre-teen and teen children about sexual relationships, preventing teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. Nevada ranks second in the country for teenage pregnancies and 10th for teenage births, according to the Southern Nevada Health District.
The first workshop is scheduled for 6 to 8:30 p.m. today at the Walnut Cecile Community Center at 3075 Walnut Road. More workshops are planned to be scheduled in ZIP codes identified as high risk, including 89119, 89115, 89030, 89106, 89101, 89102 and 89109. According to the Nevada State Health Division, in 2008, youths living within these ZIP codes represented 23 percent of teen births in Clark County.

to host Healthy eating series
Food for Health and Soul, a series of classes taught by Ramona Woodward of the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, is scheduled from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Wednesdays at the Cora Coleman Senior Center, 2100 Bonnie Lane. The six-class series is scheduled for consecutive Wednesdays. The second class in the series, Look Out for Sodium and Salt, is scheduled this week. Super Bowl skate party planned
A Super Bowl skate party is scheduled from noon to 10 p.m. Sunday at Crystal Palace Skating Center, 4680 Boulder Highway. Admission is $9 or $10 with skate rental included. Participants may pick their favorite team, the San Francisco 49ers or Baltimore Ravens, and receive a free soft drink every time that team scores.

CLARK COUNTY ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
Clark County's paid internship program, the Summer Business Institute, is accepting applications through Feb. 8 from current high school sophomores, juniors and seniors. The program will place 120 students at more than 80 area businesses in fields of law, medicine, architecture, education and communication.
The program is scheduled to run June 17 through Aug. 9. Students will be paid $8.25 and work eight-hour days Monday through Thursday. Students will also attend Friday seminars. The SBI program started in 1996.

Lecture on Guy McAfee slated
A lecture by Clark County Parks and Recreation cultural program supervisor Patrick Gaffey about controversial historical figure Guy McAfee is scheduled at 11:15 a.m. Friday at the Cora Coleman Senior Center, 2100 Bonnie Lane. McAfee built and operated several of the Las Vegas Valley's early casinos and gave the Strip its name.

Horse adoption set for Saturday

The second annual All Vegas Horses' Giant Tack Swap and Horse Adoption is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Horseman's Park, 5800 E. Flamingo Road. Twelve-foot-by-12-foot barn stalls will be transformed into sales and trade booths, with half the proceeds benefiting AVH's L.E.A.N. horse rescue program.

War-Inspired Art Show planned
An exhibition of acrylic paintings titled "Echoes of War: The Mind of Christian Gabriel" is set to be on display Thursday through March 17 at the Sunrise Library, 5400 Harris Ave. Gabriel is a retired M arine, and the show focuses on the subject of war, sometimes using imagery from horror movies.
