Sweden’s Jacobson in familiar spot atop Main Event leaderboard
Martin Jacobson had the chip lead after the first day of the World Series of Poker Main Event.
And the native of Sweden is the leader heading into the final day of the tournament before the “November Nine.”
Jacobson finished play early Monday with 22.335 million and sits atop the leaderboard heading into Day 7 of the $10,000 buy-in No-limit Texas Hold ’em World Championship. Play starts at noon Monday at the Rio Convention Center with 27 players and goes until the final nine are determined.
The “November Nine” return Nov. 10 to compete for the $10 million first prize at the Rio’s Penn & Teller Theater.
“It’s amazing I made it this far in the Main Event,” Jacobson said. “It’s such a big tournament, and a lot of prestige, so I’m pretty proud of myself right now.”
The Main Even has been a trouble-free ride so far for Jacobson, a native of Sweden with more than $4.8 million in live-tournament earnings, according to the Hendon Mob Poker Database. He ended Day 1A with more than 200,000 chips and also was 11th overall after Day 2A/2B as many of the other early chip leaders have fallen by the wayside.
“I felt really good the whole tournament,” Jacobson said. “It hasn’t been a roller coaster at all. I’ve been chipping up smoothly. It’s amazing.”
Jacobson said he’s not looking ahead to the final table and the eight-figure payday for the winner.
“There’s a long way to go,” he said.
Luis Velador, a two-time WSOP bracelet winner from Corona, Calif., made a big move up the leaderboard and enters Day 7 in second place with 16.6 million chips. Velador opened play Sunday in 18th place.
Las Vegas resident Dan Sindelar is close behind Velador with 16.345 million chips.
