THE LIST: DVDs, CDs and books hitting stores week of Sept. 1
DVDS
“State of Play” (PG-13): Stop the presses! In this topical thriller, a veteran Washington reporter (Russell Crowe) and a neophyte blogger (Rachel McAdams) investigate the mysterious death of a congressional staffer employed (and then some) by a rising political star (Ben Affleck), the reporter’s college roommate.
Two acclaimed indies also hit DVD today: “Sugar” (R), about a Dominican baseball star (Algenis Perez Soto, a real-life baseball player making his acting debut) who’s recruited to play in the U.S. minor leagues; and “Sin Nombre” (R), which follows several Latin American immigrants bound for the U.S., from a Mexican gang member (Edgar Flores) to a Honduran teen (Paulina Gaitan) who reunites with her estranged father.
Elsewhere, the nature documentary “Earth” (G) follows three species of mothers and babies over a year — polar bears in the Arctic, elephants in Africa’s Kalahari Desert and humpback whales near the Equator, while “Terry Fator: Live From Las Vegas” (not rated) features the Mirage headliner and his puppet co-stars.
Also due today: Christina Milian in “Bring It On: Fight to the Finish” (PG), Mariah Carey in “Tennessee” (R) and Jason Ritter in “Good Dick” (R); Blu-Ray editions of the Oscar winners “Braveheart” (R), “Gladiator” (R), “M*A*S*H” (R) and “Monster” (R); and the TV transfers (all unrated) “Impact,” "The Game: The First Season,” “Brothers and Sisters: The Complete Third Season,” “Heroes: Season Three,” “Desperate Housewives: The Complete Fifth Season,” “Supernatural: The Complete Fourth Season,” “Rescue Me: Season Five, Vol. One,” “Two and a Half Men: The Complete Sixth Season,” “Degrassi: The Next Generation — Season Eight,” “C.S.I. CDS
John Fogerty, “The Blue Ridge Rangers Rides Again”: He’s long possessed one of the most distinctive, hair raising voices in rock and roll, and now John Fogerty is lending his wild dog howl to a series of classic tunes.
Pairing up with the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Don Henley and others, Fogerty covers songs that inspired him when he was a kid, from stars such as the Everly Brothers, John Denver and Buck Owens.

BOOKS

“Evil at Heart” by Chelsea Cain: Killer Gretchen Lowell is still on the loose, but sensationalistic news coverage has made her famous instead of feared, sparking a bizarre kind of fan club. Detective Archie Sheridan, who had gotten Gretchen to agree not to kill anyone else, is forced back into action after a new body is found marked by the Beauty Killer’s trademark heart.
“Catching Fire,” the second in Suzanne Collins’ “Hunger Games” series also is expected out this week. Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark have little time to enjoy their win at the annual Hunger Games as they find themselves in the middle of a rebellion.
