‘The Raunchy Moralist’ Gives McCain An Out For His Past Adultery

Jackie Collins, the best-selling author known as "the raunchy moralist," seems to be a rare John McCain leaner in Hollywood, but it's not like she's politically active or much interested in the presidential race.

The Barack Obama-McCain face-off comes up in our conversation because, while talking about adulterers in her novels, Collins mentions Bill Clinton.

“Fidelity is much more interesting than screwing around. Screwing around is simple. And being faithful to somebody is much more difficult,” she says. “That’s why I could not support [Bill] Clinton.”

This is when I ask her about Obama-McCain.

“I like McCain. He’s a true American hero," she says. “I don’t dislike Obama. I prefer McCain. I think they’re both OK. I don’t care who wins."

I point out McCain cheated on his first wife.

“Well you know, that was a long time ago,” says Collins, who, now in her late 60s, is promoting her newest book, Married Lovers.

I remind Collins that McCain's first wife waited for him to return from a Vietnam POW imprisonment, and then he cheated on her.

“Honey,” Collins says with a smile, “if you’d been in Vietnam in his position, you would have [had sex with] anything that moved.”
