Volunteer opportunities vary in Henderson

Volunteer opportunities in Henderson range from helping in hospitals to working at the Clark County Museum.

ST. ROSE HOSPITALS

Henderson resident Fanny McCowan smiles while greeting a customer in the gift shop at St. Rose Dominican Hospital Rose de Lima campus, 102 E. Lake Mead Parkway.

As a volunteer, McCowan runs the gift shop Thursday and Friday and subs in during other shifts if needed.

“I just like getting out of the house and seeing people,” McCowan said. “I’m not the type to sit around; I never have been. I just like getting out and doing something.”

More than 550 volunteers work at the hospitals’ three campuses: Rose de Lima; Siena, 3001 St. Rose Parkway; and San Martin, 8280 W. Warm Springs Road.

They help run the gift shops and front desks, discharge patients, file papers, run errands, deliver items, socialize with patients and more, according to Jamie Olsen, director of volunteer services.

“If we didn’t have volunteers, and all the work was dumped back onto the employees, it would be a huge undertaking for them,” Olsen said.

Within 10 years, McCowan has volunteered more than 4,300 hours at the hospital. She has spent the last six years working in the gift shop.

“The gift shop is an outlet for the employees, patients and visitors dealing with hardships to get their mind off stuff,” Olsen said. “Fanny is fabulous at helping them laugh and smile because she just has that fun personality.”

In order to volunteer, the hospital requires a background check for individuals 18 or older, lab work and a 100-hour commitment. Volunteers ages 14 to 18 must have at least a 3.0 GPA at school.

CLARK COUNTY MUSEUM

The Clark County Museum, 1830 S. Boulder Highway, is home to historic artifacts, buildings and information.

Covering 30 acres, the facility uses volunteers to assist in educational field trips, data entry and maintain the museum grounds, according to museum specialist Malcolm Vuksich.

“We have about 35 volunteers total,” Vuksich said. “About 23 are with the education program, and the remainder are with the care of the collections and registrar data entry.”

The museum includes exhibit halls, a collection of historic buildings, a Union Pacific steam engine, a ghost town, a nature trail and more.

Eagle Scout projects through the Boy Scouts of America are also welcomed by the museum.

“We rely on the projects because they provide quite a bit of assistance,” Vuksich said. “Past projects have helped mark trails and paint homes. So, we’re open to anyone who’s looking to complete their project.”

Volunteers are required to pass a background check, which may take up to six weeks, according to Vuksich.
