Young parents arrested after baby found with 20 fractures

A Connecticut couple is being charged after a 1-month-old infant was found to have 20 fractures.

Nikolas Radaskie, 21, and Kali Sastrum, 18, were both charged with risk of injury to a minor.

The baby was brought to St. Mary‘s Hospital in Waterbury on July 2 with what ended up being a broken leg, with a complete break of the left femur bone.

According to the police report, Sastrum brought the baby to the hospital for a swollen leg and was shocked to find out it was broken.

The couple told police they had no idea how the leg may have been broken and that the baby had no other contact recently with anyone else aside from them.

When asked to provide a statement, police said the couple declined and said they had contacted an attorney who told them not to give a statement or talk to police about the injuries.

Police received a fax from the Connecticut Children‘s Medical Center that said the baby had 20 fractures both old and new, in addition to the broken femur the baby had multiple fractures to his ribs, a torn labial frenulum and a broken blood vessel in his eye.

The doctor told police the injuries were the result of inflicted trauma and could not have been self-inflicted.

The couple was released on a $25,000 bond and are expected to appear in court on Aug. 4.
