Washoe County fills vacated Nevada Assembly seat

CARSON CITY — Amber Joiner, who formerly worked for the state Department of Health and Human Services as a deputy director, was named Tuesday to fill a vacancy in the state Assembly.

The Washoe County Commission picked Joiner to replace Reno Democrat Assemblyman David Bobzien, who resigned his seat to take a position on the Reno City Council following his re-election to the Assembly on Nov. 4.

Joiner, who has also worked as a lobbyist for the Nevada Medical Association, will serve out Bobzien’s term in District 24. Joiner is also a Democrat. Bobzien’s replacement had to be of the same party.

The balance of power in the Legislature will remain unchanged, with 25 Republicans and 17 Democrats.

“Amber will be a fantastic public servant for Assembly District 24 as we head into the legislative session,” said Assembly Democratic Leader Marilyn Kirkpatrick. “We have a lot of work to do in the incoming session to adequately fund our schools and put Nevadans back to work; I am confident that Amber will work on behalf of all constituents and put the needs of the community and the state above all else.”

Joiner was the unanimous choice of the commission from among 12 applicants.
