Eighth-inning rally powers Rebels to baseball win over New Mexico

Cody Howard and Nick Rodriguez each hit a two-run single in the eighth inning to rally UNLV to a 6-5 victory over New Mexico in a Mountain West baseball game Sunday in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The Rebels (10-17, 4-8) trailed 5-2 entering the eighth before surging to their second victory in the past 11 games and halting the Lobos’ four-game win streak.

UNLV starter Kenny Oakley (3-3) gave up five runs, four earned, on nine hits and two walks and struck out two in seven innings.

Ben Wright pitched the final two innings, shutting out New Mexico (19-9, 9-3) and notching three strikeouts, for his sixth save.

Payton Squier went 3-for-5 with an RBI double, and Howard and Rodriguez each went 2-for-3 for the Rebels, who had a 14-11 edge in hits.

Scottie Graham went 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs, and Luis Gonzalez went 2-for-4 with a home run and scored twice for the Lobos, who had beaten UNLV 11 straight times in Albuquerque.
