Pop of summer color adds seasonal cheer

After nearly two decades of living with off-white sofas, I was ready to spin the color wheel and welcome some brighter, bolder hues to my living room when I reupholstered some furnishings this spring.

Hope for green future springs eternal at Preserve

Last week, I was sitting on the outdoor deck of a second-floor restaurant in the 100-degree-Fahrenheit heat of early evening. A group of 20 green building professionals were in town to discuss regional coordination among chapters of the U.S. Green Building Council. The setting was appropriate; we were at the Springs Preserve Café, enjoying healthy food, a great view and a light breeze that kept everyone surprisingly comfortable.

Three-way switch leaves staircase in the dark

: At either end of my staircase I have a light switch that turns the staircase light on and off. The problem is that the switches don’t work correctly anymore. What can I do to fix this?

Succulents don’t require daily irrigation

: I have a Vera Jameson sedum that has grown and spread. However, the plant leaves in the center are dying. I have planted this in the front yard where it receives full sun all day. I water it every day for four minutes in the morning with a shrubbler. I have placed rubber mulch around the base of the plant and two days ago I added some liquid plant fertilizer that I diluted in water.

Stop shelf woes with off-the-rack solution

: When we moved into this house, it seemed to have plenty of closet space. Now, with my daughters in their teens, there isn’t enough space. How can we install some inexpensive shelving to better utilize the closets? — Carla C.

FISHING REPORT

• LAKE MEAD — Anglers looking for some fun should try the Vegas Bay Arm for top-water striper action. The striped bass aren’t huge. For larger fish, try cut bait fished in deeper water. Boaters are finding success for striped bass using cut bait along the beaches between Hemenway and Pyramid Island. Shore fishing has been slow.

Lesson learned at fish school

I have decided that fish are much smarter than we give them credit for. I also think they are mean, vindictive little creatures capable of orchestrating intricate plots designed to humiliate unwary anglers. My guess is that fish study the fine art of angler humiliation while completing the curriculum offered in their schools.

Guard sidesteps NCAA hypocrisy

Brandon Jennings today should be concerned only with signing a professional basketball contract worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, complete with a plush apartment and an expensive ride. He should be dreaming about hip European culture, of perhaps enjoying a nice bruschetta outside some cafe after practice.

Summer school for Mayo, Love

It will be tough for the NBA Summer League to outdo last year, when the top two draft picks and a record 22 teams participated, drawing record crowds every day at Cox Pavilion and the Thomas & Mack Center.
