Ringing in (Another) New Year

So far, January 2009 has been bleak for Las Vegas, with unemployment rising and visitor numbers falling.

No ordinary flower

A rose may always be a rose, but sometimes a beautiful flower arrangement is more than just a beautiful flower arrangement. For members of the Ikenobo Ikebana Society, the Japanese art of flower arranging is a form of meditation as well as a teaching tool about life and nature.

Head south for the winter; harvest solar energy

I love winters in Southern Nevada! In fact, just about anytime from October to June is fine by me, but deep winter is special. I suppose it’s a stretch to call our relatively mild and brief period of cool weather “deep winter” but hey, it’s all we’ve got.

Weather changes tell roses when to go dormant

No, it is not too late to prune your roses. Mark your calendar for Jan. 24 when the South Valley Rose Society will present a free rose pruning demonstration at St. Rose Dominican Hospital, Siena campus, continuously from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The campus is located at 3001 St. Rose Parkway, Henderson. For more information, call the master gardener help line at 257-5555
