Freddie Mac: Mortgage rates hit low for year

WASHINGTON — Rates on 30-year fixed mortgages fell this week to the lowest level of the year and were barely shy of the all-time low. Mortgage finance company Freddie Mac says the average rate sank to 4.72 percent. It was just above the record of 4.71 set last December.

World Cup referees learning English swear words

RUSTENBURG, South Africa — The Brazilian referee and his assistants who will work the England-United States match at the World Cup have been studying English-language obscenities the players might use. Carlos Simon will referee Saturday’s match, assisted by Roberto Braatz and Altemir Hausmann. They want to ensure players can’t get away with abuse. Braatz says they aren’t learning them in “11 different languages, but at least we have to know the swear words in English.”

Cruise to bring ‘Tropic’ character back to screen

LOS ANGELES — Tom Cruise is bringing his foul-mouthed, hairy-handed Hollywood producer character Les Grossman back to the big screen. Paramount Pictures and MTV Films say they’re developing a film around the fictional character that Cruise brought to life in 2008’s “Tropic Thunder.” The 47-year-old actor reprised the role at Sunday’s MTV Movie Awards.
