SAN FRANCISCO — If the past is any indication, Tim Cook’s mastery of inventory management and his high expectations of employees should leave Apple Inc. in good hands while its charismatic leader, Steve Jobs, takes a medical leave of absence. Apple said Monday that Cook, the chief operating officer, will take charge of the iPhone and iPad maker as Jobs focuses on his health. Apple did not say when, if ever, Jobs would return as CEO.
NEW YORK — For such a famously excitable guy, Regis Philbin made his big announcement with surprising calm: He’s retiring from his show. Philbin delivered the news at the start of Tuesday morning’s “Live With Regis and Kelly,” which he has hosted for more than a quarter-century, most recently sharing hosting duties with Kelly Ripa. He said he would be stepping down from the show around the end of the summer.
