2 people displaced, cat killed in Las Vegas house fire

Two people were displaced and a cat was killed in a house fire in the northwest valley on Saturday afternoon, according to the Las Vegas Fire Department.

The Fire Department received multiple calls of black smoke coming from a house about 2 p.m. in the 5900 block of Cancun Avenue, near Jones and Iron Mountain roads.

Before firefighters arrived, neighbors were trying to put the fire out with several garden hoses.

The Fire Department said the fire started in a bedroom and spread to the attic of a one-story, single-family home. The fire was ruled accidental but remained under investigation by the Fire Department.

No one was home at the time of the fire, officials said. However, a small pet dog was hiding in the garage during the fire and was not injured.

Damage was estimated about $75,000. One adult and one teen were assisted by the American Red Cross.
