LETTER: Reid a boon to state, deserves thanks

To the editor:
Each time I venture out of my restricted, cubbyhole existence onto the highways, bridges and other accommodations erected or improved in Nevada, I think of and mentally thank Sen. Harry Reid. I do this out loud if I am with someone. His election to and rise in the U.S. Senate has been a great boon to this state.
I recall being in Thailand in 1974 and about to retire from the U.S. Air Force because of a projected undesirable assignment. I told the people in my office that upon my return to Nevada, I was going to work for Mr. Reid because “Harry Reid is going to Washington, and I’m going with him.”
Well, my assignment was changed, and I was sent back to Nellis Air Force Base, so I did not retire at that time. But I have always admired the man.
I remember when the mob referred to him as “Mr. Clean Face” because he was incorruptible. I knew that he was destined for greatness, and I have always regretted that I did not hitch my wagon to his rising star. I see no reason why some Nevadans despise him, except perhaps because he supported President Barack Obama.
History will vindicate and enshrine Sen. Reid for his work on our behalf.
