Should piercing babies’ ears be banned?

A politician in the United Kingdom is spearheading a campaign to ban parents from piercing their infant’s ears as they can not consent to the procedure.

Labour MP Mark Tami will address the House of Commons about the ban after a petition gained 28,000 signatures, the Guardian reported. The petition, asking for 40,000 signatures online, had more than 36,000 as of Thursday afternoon.

“If we allowed parents to do other things to their children’s faces, like tattooing, that would be appalling, but although piercings can heal, they can still cause distorting affects on the ear, in the skin and muscle,” Tami said.

According to Public Health England, there is no nationally recognized or accredited training for tattooing and piercing.
