4 dead in Colorado Springs shooting

Four people, including the suspect, died on Saturday in a series of shootings over several city blocks in downtown Colorado Springs, Colorado, where the shooter died after an exchange of gunfire with police, authorities said.

Colorado Springs police responded to an emergency call of shots fired and tracked down the suspect, who shot at them before they returned fire, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

El Paso County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Jacqueline Kirby told reporters that police shot an armed suspect near a Wendy's restaurant, according to the Colorado Springs Gazette.

"The crime scene investigation covers multiple city blocks," the Sheriff's Office statement said.

Authorities said there appears to be no further threat to the community, and Kirby said that aside from the four people killed in the shooting, including the suspect, no one else was injured.

Matt Abshire, 21, a resident of the area, told the Gazette he looked out from his apartment and saw a man with a rifle shoot another person. Abshire then went outside and saw the shooter open fire and strike a pair of women, including one who appears to have been shot in the face, he told the newspaper.

The Colorado Springs area is home to the U.S. Air Force Academy.
