Driver arrested for DUI after fatal Saturday night crash

One man died and another was arrested Saturday night after a crash in the southwest valley, Las Vegas police said.

The crash happened at 6:18 p.m. where a 2003 Ford Explorer Sport Trac was northbound on Buffalo Drive at the intersection with Badura Avenue and a 2001 BMW 330 CI was southbound on Buffalo, according to a Metro news release.

The Ford, driven by 40-year-old Marc Fernandez, attempted to make a left-turn in front of the oncoming BMW, driven by a 19-year-old man, and was struck. The impact caused both cars to rotate to a stop as they slid southbound, the release said.

Fernandez and the two occupants of the BMW, the 19-year-old driver and a 17-year-old boy in the passenger seat, were taken to University Medical Center. Fernandez had minor injuries and the 17-year-old boy suffered serious injuries that police said were not considered life-threatening.

The 19-year-old man died at the hospital despite all treatment efforts, the release said. His identity will be released by the Clark County coroner's office.

Fernandez showed signs of impairment and was charged with one count of driving under the influence resulting in death and one count of driving under the influence resulting in substantial bodily harm, according to police.

This was Metro's 69th traffic-related fatality for the year 2015.
