DPS captain tapped as interim administrator of Taxicab Authority

Department of Public Safety Capt. Tom Ely was appointed on Thursday as interim administrator of the Nevada Taxicab Authority beginning Oct. 27.

The appointment was made by Department of Business and Industry Director Bruce Breslow.

Ely currently serves as the captain of the Parole and Probation’s Northern Command-Rural Offices and will return to his duties at DPS once a permanent appointment is made to the Taxicab Authority post.

“We are pleased that DPS has made Captain Ely available to us during this transition,” Breslow said in a statement. “He will work closely the director’s office and Taxicab Authority staff to oversee all functions of the agency.”

Ely has nearly 27 years of full-time law enforcement experience in progressive leadership roles, with more than 20 years at DPS where he has managed high profile units, operations and personnel. He has also served as an agency trainer and leadership instructor and has extensive experience in technology infrastructure. Prior to his law enforcement service, he began his career in administration and operational management of a private sector transportation and logistics company.

A formal recruitment for a permanent administrator has begun. The Taxicab Authority Board is working with the Nevada Department of Administration to conduct a national search. Following a public interview process by the Board, a list of three candidates will be provided to Breslow for consideration and appointment.
