Bill Cosby and the cruelty of Twitter

For those who do not know, allegations of serial rape have swirled around beloved American comedian Bill Cosby for years.

Lawsuits have been filed, but settled out of court. No allegation proved.

So now comes in this day and age of social media a phenomenon we’ll likely see more of, I suspect — the digital revenge of Twitterverse.

Cosby’s Twitter feed on Monday posted a picture of the comedian asking people in a good natured way to “Go ahead. Meme me! #cosbymeme”.

And the harsh, long-memory inhabitants of Twitterverse responded by resurrecting those rape allegations. You can see the results here.

It also brought out an op-ed piece in the Washington Post from one of his accusers.

Not sure what the moral of this story should be. If Cosby is guilty of serial rape, then it’s justice of a sort. Not even sure the word “justice” is the right word.

But if he’s a victim in all this, then this is an episode of pure cruelty from which there appears no escape.

Is there a remedy? Or, is this what humanity has always been like, only amplified by the digital age? Thoughts?
