Fire at vacant home ruled accidental, caused $80,000 in damages

A fire that caused $80,000 in damages late Monday morning was ruled accidental.

Firefighters arrived at the house on the 8300 block of Emerald Isle Avenue, near Rampart and Lake Mead boulevards about 11:45 a.m., and found a fire burning in the garage of a two-story wood-framed house, according to fire spokesman Tim Szymanski. The fire damaged the garage and the bedroom above the garage.

Neighbors tried to put out the fire with garden hoses after calling 911, Szymanski said.

The house is vacant and undergoing renovations, according to fire officials. Gas containers were stored in the garage next to power equipment and the water heater, and power was still on at the house, which was locked and secured when firefighters made entry, Szymanski said.

There were no injuries reported and the cause of the fire has not been determined yet.
